FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Charlottesville, VA, August 21, 2024 – Acclaimed musician Dave Matthews has agreed to participate in the upcoming documentary Joy Brown, directed by filmmaker Eduardo Montes-Bradley. The film, produced by Heritage Film Project with the support of the Documentary Film Fund, has been in the making for nearly two years, spanning multiple locations including Japan, Shanghai, New York, and Kent, Connecticut, where Joy Brown resides.
Dave Matthews, a longtime admirer and collector of Brown’s work, recorded an insightful and heartfelt conversation with Montes-Bradley at his residence in Charlottesville. Mathew, known for his role as the lead singer and guitarist of the Dave Matthews' Band, reflected on the profound human connections evoked by Brown's monumental sculptures. He discussed the unique body language of her human-like statues, which have graced prominent locations such as Broadway, as well as various exhibitions in the United States, China, and Japan.
According to director Eduardo Montes-Bradley, Matthews’ participation adds a significant dimension to the film. “Having the testimonial from a collector, or even an admirer of the artist's work, helps the film to bridge the distance between the artist and the public,” said Montes-Bradley. “Ultimately, we do not create in a vacuum, and the meaning we imprint on our work is not necessarily what others can see. By listening to Mr. Matthews, we get a clearer and more complete vision of how her work is perceived by others. Statues speak to each of us in different ways.”
As Joy Brown approaches completion, the inclusion of Matthews’ perspective promises to deepen the audience’s understanding of the artist’s work and its impact on those who experience it. The film, set to be a compelling exploration of Brown’s artistry, is expected to offer viewers an intimate look at the intersections of art, culture, and human expression.
